From one Student to Another: Keeping Calm and Going to London

Meet one of our incredible Merchant Alumni, Julian Debbag!

From one to another: From BA to LBS

Julian’s MBA Journey:

Julian graduated from the Instituto Tecnologico de Buenos Aires (ITBA) in 2015 with a degree in chemical engineering. After graduation, Julian set his professional career in motion at National Oilwell Varco (NOV) as a Sales Coordinator for Argentina, Bolivia, and Chile. He spent almost two years with the company before transitioning to oil and gas consulting.

For the past two years, Julian has been working as a Sales Manager at NOV. Last year, after speaking to a friend, Julian began looking into MBA programs and researching his options.

Julian knew that his first step towards his MBA dreams was to conquer the GMAT exam. The exam is required for admission to MBA programs around the world and demands significant preparation. A high score on the GMAT exam is one of the best ways a competitive MBA candidate can bolster their application.

Julian first began studying for the GMAT with Merchant in November 2019. The quantitative aspects of the exam came naturally to him thanks to his engineering background and experience working through complex mechanical problems. As a non-native speaker, he understands that the verbal sections require practice but the learning process was smooth and Julian quickly excelled at the exam!

Julian’s GMAT Secret to Success:

Julian offers advice for students regarding GMAT Preparation: the best way to learn is by following your tutors and completing real exam problems. He also emphasizes that the end of the course is key so make sure to go back and review earlier content in order to make sure you are fully prepared for the exam. Studying for the exam can be difficult, but Julian is confident that the best way to prepare is by disciplined study.

In terms of taking the GMAT exam, Julian urges students to be conscious of time. With just under 2 minutes a question, the GMAT pushes students to make quick but educated decisions based on the content given. When he took the GMAT the first time, Julian became aware of the true time pressure component of the exam. He recommends finding a timing strategy that works best and practicing a lot before test day.

After receiving acceptances to numerous MBA programs, Julian decided to attend London Business School, and will begin his studies next month! What attracted Julian to London was its prime location in Europe as a global gateway. As an avid traveller, Julian appreciated the international classroom experience. Not only will LBS help him learn and grow as a professional, but by living in London, Julian hopes to take full advantage of the travel opportunities to supplement his classroom education.

Congratulations Julian and best of luck on your new adventure!

Take the next step in your career today.
